Short answer

Burford is a small historic town on a hill above the River Windrush. Most old houses have stone slate roofs on old oak timbers, and many are listed. West Oxfordshire District Council handles consent. The steep, busy High Street makes access the first question for any firm.

Layers of old work

The High Street runs down to an old bridge over the Windrush, with stone houses, inns and shops on both sides. One house can have a medieval core, a later stone front and early 20th-century changes. Old roof timbers can be part of the listing. Old rubber-insulated or lead-sheathed cable can still turn up in roof spaces.

Burford was one of the first conservation areas in West Oxfordshire, designated in 1970. Listed building consent is needed for a change of roof material, dormer, chimney or roof light. The council says unauthorised work to a listed building is a criminal offence with no time limit.

Access, the river and the network

A scaffold on the High Street needs a licence from Oxfordshire County Council. Shops and inns stay open, so the scaffold must keep their doors clear. Low ground by the Windrush has some flood risk. SSEN runs the network.

Mostly off the gas grid

In the 2021 Census, only 9.6 per cent of households in Burford ward used mains gas alone, against 74.0 per cent for England. Oil heated 41.2 per cent.
