Short answer

Chipping Norton is a high, exposed market town in West Oxfordshire. Its centre mixes medieval houses with Georgian fronts, stone slate roofs and Victorian terraces. Wind and frost wear roofs hard here. Old buildings can also hide timbers and voids that change the cable routes, so ask for a survey before you take a quote.

Old houses behind later fronts

Around the Market Place, many houses are medieval buildings with 18th-century fronts. An older structure can sit behind a later face. Bliss Tweed Mill was built in 1872, closed in 1980 and is now flats. West Oxfordshire District Council names it as one of its Grade II* buildings.

Wind and frost

The town is often called the highest in Oxfordshire. Wind lifts ridge tiles, verge slates and lead flashings. Frost breaks down old mortar, and hard cement mortar cracks as a roof moves. Lime mortar suits an old stone roof better.

The centre has been a conservation area since 1970. The council warns that unauthorised work to a listed building is a criminal offence, and the liability can pass to a new owner. SSEN runs the power network. This page also covers Charlbury, in the Evenlode valley, which has been a conservation area since 1974.
