Short answer

Homes in the Five Valleys
The town grew on the cloth trade. Mill workers lived in stone cottages on the valley sides, and many of these keep their stone slate roofs. Victorian houses mostly have Welsh slate. On these roofs, rusted nails can let slates slip across the whole roof. Several old mills are now flats. A converted mill can have a landlord supply for shared areas and a separate supply for each flat.
Article 4 and conservation areas
The council lists 41 conservation areas in the district. Stroud Town Centre and Stroud Top of the Town have Article 4 directions. The council says some of these apply only to walls that face a road or a public open space. Painswick has its own conservation area, and Bisley has an Article 4 direction.
Slopes and damp
Steep streets can make a scaffold taller and dearer. Rooms cut into the hillside can stay damp, and damp can damage sockets and make an RCD trip. National Grid Electricity Distribution runs the network here.
Gas in town, oil in the hills
In the 6 Stroud town wards, 73.7 per cent of households used mains gas alone in the 2021 Census. Painswick is different: 16.5 per cent of households in Painswick and Upton ward used oil alone.
